Warriors Rise to the Top at the Westmont Tournament

On September 20, the Lady Warriors traveled to Westmont High School to participate in the annual Westmont tournament.  Earning third place in 2006 and second place in 2007 in this tournament, the Warriors were ready to step it up again and bring home the first place trophy.

In the first match of the day, the Warriors faced off against Santa Clara High School to start off pool play and played a very consistent two games, winning quickly, 25-11, 25-18.

The Warriors then took on the second seed in their pool, San Lorenzo High School.  Establishing their rhythm early in the game, the Warriors excelled on serve receive and were able to run a varied offense on the net.  The girls fought to the end and won the match, 25-18, 25-16.

Moving into bracket play, the Warriors played against Willow Glen High School and played one of their best games of the season so far.  The girls served tough and put their opponents on their heels early in the first game.  The Warriors pushed hard and never looked back, winning the first game with an impressive 25-7 final score.  In the second game, the Warriors let up on defense and struggled with blocking, but were still able to manage a victory, 25- 20.

Advancing to the gold bracket, the Warriors competed against Saratoga High School in the first round.  The girls improved their blocking and proved to be strong presences on the net against Saratoga.  The Warriors shut down their opponent’s key hitters early and were able to surge ahead.  Strong serving led the Warriors to a close victory in two games, 25-19, 25-23.

In the tournament finals, the Warriors faced off against Mercy- Burlingame and were prepared for a tough last match.  However, the girls gained momentum early and pushed ahead.  Strong defensive passing allowed junior setter Rachel Alvey to run a complex offense with her front row hitters, further extending the Warrior lead.  The Warriors claimed a victory in the first game, 25-12.  However, in the second game, Mercy fought back and pushed the Warriors to fight for a win.  The girls answered the challenge and increased their intensity from the service line, serving many aces over the course of the second game.  In the end, the Warriors defeated Mercy, 25-18, and claimed their team’s first tournament championship.

One of the Warriors’ goals set at the beginning of the season was to win at least one season tournament.  The Warriors claimed a decisive victory at the Westmont Tournament and did not even let another team steal a game from them.  The Warriors have started off the season very strong and are now looking towards the Cupertino Classic Tournament on October 10, hoping to win another championship trophy.
