Evergreen Shutout Shocks Warriors

SAN JOSE – Valley Christian Varsity Girls Soccer team was shocked to say the least as the final whistle blew Monday at the Evergreen Valley High School home field. A rock solid Cougar team handed a 2 – 0 shutout loss that came it seemed, as a surprise to the Warriors. The surprise was not the high level of play by Evergreen but from VC’s inability to get into its rhythm.

A very lack luster performance in the first half found the Warriors in the hole at the break 1 – 0. “No excuses, Evergreen played well and we never got going,” Coach Jolene Keel explained after the game. “We will have to find a way to play a complete game, if we came out at the beginning of the game with the same intensity we had in the second half the end result would have been very different,” Keel added.

As the play resumed in the second half it appeared that VC had resuscitated itself. The team was able to keep a sustained attack alive, controlling the momentum. “We actually put up a lot of decent shots in the second half and they were all on frame. At that point their goalie was playing with total confidence and she made some great stops, tough to beat,” Asst. Coach Stryker commented.

The VC defense was challenged all day but rose to the occasion as the game wore on. The Warriors began to take some chances offensively late in the game which lead to a minor breakdown that allowed a through ball into the defense which was converted on a well played cross for the final score.

The ladies will be back in action this Thursday vs. a stubborn Monta Vista team at Valley.
