CCS Div II Tournament - Sobrato Revisited
MORGAN HILL – The eighth seeded Valley Christian Varsity Girls soccer team opened their CCS Div II tournament play against ninth seeded Sobrato High School at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex earlier today.
The Warriors established dominance throughout the first half of play keeping the ball in the Sobrato attack zone for the majority of play, out shooting the Bulldogs 23 – 2. Morgan Celaya put VC on the board when she cranked a shot from 30+ yards that cleared the goalie for a 1 – 0 lead. Shortly after that Anna Calderon fired a ball that caught the cross bar and bounced straight down for what appeared to be a second goal. Although the Assistant Referee signaled a goal the Center Referee thought the AR had signaled a foul and continued play leaving the sidelines bewildered.
High winds wreaked havoc for both teams making it difficult to move the ball against the wind. Facing the wind in the second half tested the Lady Warriors defensive patience. Overcoming an early 2nd half momentum swing VC once again found its balance and regained control of the game.
Anna Calderon received a pass from CJ Wrye then sent it beyond the reach of the Sobrato goalie for the second tally. “I was so excited to see the ball hit the back of the net,” a jubilant team Co-Captain Anna Calderon commented after the game.
“We played sound defense today especially when the wind was working against us,” Coach Jolene Keel said post game. “It seemed that Sobrato was truly looking to take advantage to the wind in the second half but our defense was prepared.”
The Warriors will now face Burlingame at 2:30pm on the road this Saturday in the Quarter Finals.
