WCAL Tournament Opener
SAN JOSE – The third place Valley Christian Varsity Girls Soccer began their title defense of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs at home today against Sacred Heart Prep. The Lady Warriors easily handled the Gators 3 – 0.
This game had far less drama than last Saturdays 3 – 2 thrilling late game victory, however the outcome was just as important. Once again capitalizing on the set plays Emily Von Raesfeld had an unassisted corner kick goal to start the Warrior scoring at 16:32 in the match. Less than 2 minutes later Macie McMillan was able to convert on a ping ponging ball in front of the Sacred Heart Prep goal.
“The key for us today was not to allow a Sacred Heart Prep an advantage by letting down especially after we score,” Coach Jolene Keel was overheard commenting after the game. “We really kept with the game plan today and are pleased with the results.”
The lone second half score came on another corner kick when Emily Von Raesfeld connected with Macie McMillan with under 7 minutes remaining in the game. All team members had a chance to get on the field today. It was also an opportunity to see the new players added to the roster from the JV team earlier this week.
Roster additions include: Sophomores Cari Cronquist and Lindsay Pund along with Freshmen Olivia DeLa Torre (injured), Christina Lopez, Taryn Ng, and Vivian Thorbeck.
“The JV program has done an excellent job preparing the younger girls for our program,” said Assistant Coach Bill Stryker. “We always look forward to watching them get their first opportunity to play at the varsity level.”
The Warriors will be putting their 9 game unbeaten streak on the line against St. Francis this Tuesday at 2:45 pm in Mountain View.
