Warriors Tie Lancers
MOUNTAIN VIEW – Senior night for the Lancers meant a game under the lights for the Valley Christian Varsity Girls Soccer team. The game had no bearing on the final league standings for either team as Mitty had defeated Presentation earlier in the afternoon securing first and fourth places respectfully. For the second place Lancers and the third place Warriors bragging rights were on the line which is paramount when these two teams go head to head.
The rain began to fall as the pre-game celebrations were underway then faded when the opening whistle blew. You could sense it in the air; this was to be another hard fought match. Battle, they did to a 1 – 1 tie, Valley’s 3rd this year. An extremely strong offensive team St. Francis out shot VC 14 - 9.
The first half ended in a 0 – 0 tie. Most of the St. Francis scoring opportunities came from five corner kicks awarded them. A very stubborn Warrior defense was able to thwart the set play chances.
Invigorated after the break Valley got on the board when Seniors Megan Malave and Pricilla Flores teamed up for a highlight reel goal. Malave flicked a perfect ball to Flores who unleashed a shot that flew past a diving Lindsay Dickerson. “It felt like a clean shot when it left my foot,” Pricilla Flores commented. “I knew it had a chance.”
At 53:44 Lancer standout Stephanie Bell broke through the middle defense and took goalie Kendra Gillio 1 v 1 placing the ball beyond her reach for the equalizer.
The tie extended the Warrior’s unbeaten streak to 8 with an impressive 8 -3 – 3 league record securing 3rd place in round robin play. The WCAL tournament will begin Saturday at 11:00 am as VC will face Sacred Heart Prep at home. |
