SAN JOSE - The VC Varsity Girls Soccer team began their 2006-2007 campaign on Friday afternoon at the friendly confines of their home field against the Live Oak. The Lady Warriors proved to be too much for the Acorns defense as the team scored 4 goals in the first half and two more in the second for a 6 -0 shutout.
Sophomore Emily von Raesfeld scored the first of three goals at 9:52 on a well placed through ball from Junior Morgan Celaya. Senior Erin Vroom tallied next on a great cross from Kristin Houp. Senior Ali Cheadle headed a goal on an assist from Stephanie Bales. First year Varsity player Sarah Pitzen sent a rebound off the goalie into the back of the net at 34:14 to end the first half scoring.
Although scoring was plentiful the opportunities were set up by outstanding defensive play. Goalie Kendra Gillio rarely touched the ball as the defensive line was impenetrable most of the game. Standout performances were turned in by Katy McLaughlin, Macie McMillan, and Allison Power.
The second half was all Warriors as Emily von Raesfeld powered two goals in a 1:51 span to complete her hat trick.
“We are really looking forward to this season both on and off the field” stated four year Varsity Coach Jolene Keel after the game. “The girls played as a team today moving the ball with ease” she added.
Following the game the team left on a road trip to Fresno where they will play the Central Section powerhouse San Joaquin Memorial High on Saturday. A team building program will be part of the weekend trip as well.
