Tigers Tie Up Warriors

SAN MATEO, CA – Although not their official home field Notre Dame Belmont celebrated their Senior Day this year on the Serra campus. The large vocal crowd came to watch the seniors play their last home game against a very pesky Valley Christian team that has bruised the Tiger pride regularly over the past few seasons. In what has turned into quite the grudge match the teams faced off for their second meeting of the year.

The game began fiercely. Net minder Chana’e Jones was challenged early but was up to the task. A strong direct shot slipped through Jones’ initial contact and forced her to dive backwards towards the goal to keep it from giving the Tigers an early lead. Moments later Jones made another amazing save on a near post bullet that she blocked wide of the goal. Notre Dame had the early momentum, but the Warriors weathered the storm and worked hard to regain strength.

35:11 into the match ND was called for a foul 42 yards out. Sophomore Emily vonRaesfeld put the free kick on frame which backed the Tiger goalie up against the goal line where she deflected the ball up and off the crossbar. A hard charging Rachel Schweiger headed the ball while gathering up the goalie and another defender all of whom ended up in the back of the net for the go ahead goal.

Early in the second half Emily Boudreau broke through the Valley defense and took on the goalie one v one. The equalizer passed just beyond the diving Jones causing an eruption from home crowd.

The Lady Warriors remained confident and it looked at times were ready to once again take control of the game. Equally stubborn the Tigers continued keep the pressure on. Both teams traded opportunities but were unable to convert ending the game with a 1 – 1 tie. This was the Warrior's first draw in league play this season.

The Valley Christian team was clearly not pleased with the outcome after the game. “They came out pumped up and aggressive, we didn’t really play to our potential,” Senior Rachel Schweiger commented at a post game activity. “It is disappointing to tie a team we know we can beat.”
