12/19/07 ~ G - Basketball
07-08 Season Preview

Team 1

The warriors are looking to continue their rise as a successful basketball program after their impressive 24-12 record in 2006-2007. Last year saw the ladies earn their first ever CCS Championship in a win over Santa Cruz in the Division IV final. The playoff run continued with a dramatic home win over Marin Catholic and a solid performance in a win at Bear River in the Northern California playoffs. The season ended one game shy of the state final as Nor Cal runner-up in a loss to Bruins of St. Patrick/St. Vincent.

This year the warriors have jumped out to a quick 9-0 start.  The first three victories came at the Glen Ventura Memorial Tournament where the ladies successfully defended their championship again beating Soquel High School in back to back years. Kelsey Byrd brought home the tournament MVP and AJ Newton not to be outdone received the All-Tournament nod. Two days later, a tough team from Tracy High came to Valley to give the team their first test of the year. After a first half battle the Warriors separated themselves in the second half on the way to their fourth victory. A great beginning that pushed the new group of Warriors into the young season.

Monta Vista Classic Champions

The Monte Vista Classic was next on the list for the team. Like the previous tournament the Warriors made quick work of the teams they faced, and like before they defended another tournament championship in back to back years. In the tournament final defense was the key holding a formidable South San Francisco team to zero points in the third quarter on the way to a 62-26 victory. The floor general Jazzmyne Ross took the MVP trophy with her teammates AJ Newton and Jazmine Davis taking home All-Tournament honors. After seven games in ten days the ladies took a much deserved week off from competition.

After a week of practice and only beating up on each other, the team spent a Friday night in the Saratoga hills, for some rest and team bonding. The group roughed it a bit, cooking their own dinner over an open fire and for desert roasted marshmallows. The rest of the night was a mix of games and group discussions. Lights out was 11pm but rumor has it sleeping wasn’t in the plan until much later. The morning came all to quickly for everyone. After breakfast and checking out the team was led on a hike through the hills by Mr. Griffith (who set up the overnight stay). Following the hike, the ladies loaded up their things and headed back to the school for a brisk morning jog to coach Harris’ house. After the run, a van ride back to Valley ended the retreat where the exhausted yet refocused group went home thinking of each other and the team goals.

As the season begins to take off, the Warriors are improving with every game. The ladies still have a game and the West Coast Jam to play before heading into WCAL play. Look for a team that will bring full court pressure and up tempo style of play every game. The team has high hopes of building off their CCS title and Northern Cal finals from last year. It will be a great time out watching the 2007-2008 Warriors.
