Lady Warriors Beat Monarchs for the First Time
“Beat Mitty.” It was something the Valley Christian Lady Warriors have been waiting for. It had been a goal set by previous seasons over a decade ago. Wednesday would go down in Valley Christian history. The VC Varsity Girls Basketball team has finally defeated the Mitty Monarchs for the first time ever, and it was a battle hard fought and well earned.
Even though the Monarchs had beaten Valley over and over again in the past with their size and strength, it was not enough to stop the Warriors from using their speed and team work to over power what has previously been known as their “Goliath.” Mitty had won the opening tip off but it was within seconds that Jasmine Ross had stolen the ball and created a game that Mitty would have to fight for in order to continue their winning streak over Valley. This winning streak has finally come to an end, and the Lady Warriors proved last night that the tables have turned in this rivalry.
Valley Christian was only down the first few minutes by two points. As soon as Kelsey Byrd made the first two points of the game for VC, they would hold that lead for almost the entire game. Valley would hold this lead at the half to make the score 22 to 17 giving the Warriors confidence that this game could end up theirs. With the help of Amy Griffith and her aggressive rebounding, Byrd’s shooting, and A.J. Newton’s ball handling skills, the Warriors came out of the half ready to play, but so did Mitty. Mitty has never been a team to let up and they continued to put the pressure on Ross and Newton forcing VC to break their press. Although Mitty’s press is tough to beat, Valley’s quick passing and team work would not let the pressure get in the way. Mitty was never able to gain the lead until the final minute when Anna Stevens hit a three point shot that put Mitty ahead by one making it 44 to 43 forcing a Monarch timeout. Valley regrouped, calmed down and stepped back into the game with poise and composure giving Newton the opportunity to drive to the basket and hit a game winning 6 footer with 2.1 seconds to play. It was all over from there. Mitty threw a desperation pass and Griffith was able to get a hand on the ball which was just enough to run the clock out. “We have been waiting for this for a long time. Our team work was what won the game for us” said Byrd. It was this team work that a new legacy for Valley Christian Girls Basketball has begun. No longer will they live in the shadow of the Mitty Monarchs. For they have defeated their Giant. Final Score: 45-44 Valley Christian. |
