Second-Half Goals Propel Azusa Pacific Into National Title Game
Written by Lynsey Domene
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Freshman Lynsey Domene assisted on the first
goal and scored the second to lead No. 3 Azusa Pacific to a 2-1 upset
of defending national champion Lindsey Wilson (17-3-3) in the
semifinal round of the 2007 NAIA Women's Soccer National tournament on
Monday. With the win, the Cougars (20-1-1) avenged last year's loss to
the Blue Raiders in the title game.
After a scoreless first half, a set piece led to the break-through
goal five minutes into the second frame. Domene took a corner kick
from the left side and Randie Massaro finished it off with a header to
give APU the lead.
Domene extended the Cougar lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal, her
seventh of the season, in the 69th minute. After Azusa Pacific won the
ball after a short Lindsey Wilson goal kick and Domene was on the
receiving end of a short pass. She took a couple of touches and buried
a shot into the upper right corner to seal the win.
The Blue Raiders got a goal back with 11 minutes left in the match.
Omolyn Davis took a free kick from the right side of the field, just
inside the APU defensive half of the field. The ball fell to Kimmia
Parker at point blank range in the box and Parker took advantage of
being unmarked to score her 15th goal this year. But it was not enough
to overtake the Cougars who advanced to their second straight national
championship game.
APU will take on No. 5 Martin Methodist at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with both
teams trying to win a second national title.
Comments from Brad Vroom: "Wow. What a game. Fastest pace womens soccer game I've ever seen.
Both teams came to play and displayed their best effort. Lindsey
Wilson is an awesome team. Individually very skilled. Their 3
Jamaicans were superb but we just overpowered them tonight. They had
an open net them missed and a shot hit the cross bar near the end that
would have tied it. But it was a blood and guts effort by APU and we
just ran them into the ground. Lauren and Tiffany played inside
fullbacks and played beautifully together. They shut down the
Jamaicans up the middle. An awesome defensive display. You would have
been proud of their effort!. The game was a barn burner from the
beginning.. The APU Lindsey Wilson rivalry is the most fierce in the
NAIA. It rivals Cal/Stanford or USC/UCLA as far as passion." |
