The Battle of Thermopylae, the story of 300 brave Greek Spartans reminded the coaching staff and chaperones of what the Valley Christian Girl’s Varsity Swim Team faced this past weekend with only nine swimmers. Led by Captains Alex Wells and Kristina Micotti, the Lady Warriors of Valley Christian faced an onslaught of ten other teams at the Oak Ridge Invitational. But unlike the 300 Spartans, the Lady Warriors came out victorious. Grace Anderson, Tara Bailey, Lauren Cutler, Kiley Gunter, Kellen Power, Kelsey Power and Jamie Walitsch battled in each event to score 349 points in winning the 2008 Oak Ridge Invitational in the cold and rainy conditions of El Dorado Hills. Leading by five points midway through the meet, coaches Cathy Manthey and Kyle Kikuta rallied the girl’s team to maximize points for each of the remaining events. The Lady Warriors responded, culminating by winning the final event of the meet, the 400 Free Relay by 11 seconds to defeat host Oak Ridge High School by 30 points!
