Jennifer Bergman returns to Prominence
In 2005 Valley Christian Cross Country Coach Jonathan Lee knew he had something special when a tiny freshman girl challenged the senior boys on the first run of the season. Jennifer Bergman has never backed down from a challenge. That is what made her return to the top of the CCS rankings even more satisfying. Last year Jennifer had such severe knee problems that she had to drop track and field and join swimming because running was just too painful. This year, on a modified training program, which includes lots of exercise bike time and pool running, Jennifer is faster than when she won CCS as a freshman. On Saturday Jennifer ran the second fastest time of the day at the CCS championships and won her second individual title in 3 years. She covered the 2.95 mile course in 17:33. The victory was bittersweet in a way as the girls’ team was unofficially announced as CCS champions only to have the official results prove that the Lady Warriors were second to Carmel by one point. That is still the best performance by a VCHS cross country team in CCS history. The ladies are preparing to race in the final race of the season, the CIF State Championships in Fresno on November 24, 2007. It is the third time in school history that a team has made it to the State Meet in Cross Country. Jennifer has high hopes. “I want to win the State Meet next year when my sister Amy is on the team. That would be the ultimate way to end my high school career.” After watching the past 3 years with Jennifer anything is possible.
