12/12/07 ~ B - Wrestling
Bay Area Wrestling Invitational at Castro Valley High School

BAW

Hello wrestling sports fans, the Valley Christian wrestling season is now well underway. Last weekend our wrestlers traveled to Stockton, California to compete against mostly San Joaquin opponents. However this weekend, our Warriors traveled to Castro Valley where they received exposure to opponents from the North Coast area.

The weather was great in Castro Valley, but unlike most sports where the climate outside sets the stage for playing conditions, in wrestling it is the environment inside the wrestling arena that matters. Inside today’s venue, 20 high schools with long standing reputations for strong wrestling programs were present for this one day event. Thus the initial wrestling climate appeared to be intimidating. Many schools brought full lineups that included as many as 14 wrestlers. Valley took 6 varsity wrestlers; Jordan Osuna, Kevin Ngo, Christopher Van Elderen, Adam Crawley, Charlie Galaviz and Christopher Tozer. Yet our coaches will tell you time and time again, it is not the quantity of wrestlers you take to a tournament that is intimidating, it is the quality and sportsmanship of the wrestlers you bring that walk on and off the mat that matters. Enthusiastically, our Valley Christians warriors lived up to their coaches expectations and their own by delivering a combined win-loss record of 15 wins and 8 losses. Not bad for just bringing 6 wrestlers. But that was not all Valley had in store. Valley put a little frosting on the cake by bringing home two undefeated tournament champions: Charlie Galaviz and Christopher Tozer. Again hats off to our wrestlers for giving it their all. We are proud of you. Special thanks also to our coaches Oscar Gonzalez Jr. and Sr. for some great coaching this weekend. This weekends wrestling experience was wonderful: including the celebration at Fudruckers in Union City after the tournament.

Please see the full tournament results below:

Jordan Osuna 112 lbs 3-2 5th Place

Jordan jumped off to a great 2-0 start then suffered his first defeat when he ran into the eventual 112 lb champion from James Logan School. Jordan’s two victories were crowd pleasing pins.

Kevin Ngo 119 lbs 0-2

Kevin Ngo had a great JV season last year and just recently made the big jump to the Varsity level. Although Kevin did not place, his defensive nature makes it very difficult for his opponents to score takedowns.

Christopher Van Elderen 140 lbs 1-2

This was CJ’s first Varsity appearance this year. He too completely dominated his first opponent using bursty explosive tactics. CJ’s strength, quickness and relentless attack is threatening to any opponent he faces.

Adam Crowley 145 lbs 2-2

AJ wrestled in probably the most competitive weight class of the tournament. It was stacked with section ranked wrestlers. After suffering an early defeat he rebounded quickly and demonstrated incredible agility and heart.

Charlie Galaviz 171 lbs 4-0 Tournament Champion
