MidCals (Mid California Championships)
This weekend Gilroy High School hosted the Mid California Wrestling Championships, otherwise known as “Midcals”. This tournament was the last regular season tournament our wrestlers will participate in this season. It brought together 66 high schools from as the name implies middle California. To many the results of this high level tournament is a preclude to what will follow at the Central Coast Section Championships in three weeks. With that in mind and with the success Valley had this weekend, Valley Christian is poised to make some noise and make a big impression on the CCS community in the weeks to come.

Chris Tozer made his name known to the CCS community in a big way this weekend by advancing to the “spot light” finals. He wrestled heroically and in a controversial decision, he lost in overtime to the sections #2 seed from Palma High School. Congratulations to our Big Man at VC.
Charlie Galaviz and Peipe James also represented Valley Christian well at Midcals by going 4-2 and placing in the top 12 in their respective stacked weight classes.

Michael Sherwood stepped up again this weekend to fill the 189 lb varsity position in place of injured Mafoe James. Michael wrestled great. He did some very impressive riding in the top position to keep his opponents from escaping. Michael went 2-2 overall.

Jordan Osuna also helped Valley pickup some team points by going 2-2. He started off very strong but soon encountered lots of resistance in the 3rd and 4th rounds.
Christopher Van Elderen made his way back into the tournament line-up after taking a weekend off last week. Although he was focused and determined, a week off may have thrown off his timing. Chris went 0-2 this weekend.

Again Midcals was the last regular season tournament our wrestlers will compete in this season. Our remaining schedule consists of two more duals meets (Mitty & Serra), West Catholic League Championships, post season CCS championships and the State wrestling championships in Bakersfield.
May prayers go out to those wrestlers with injuries and/or sickness. May they soon recover so they can participate in any remaining wrestling events. |
