23rd Annual Cupertino Memorial Varsity Wrestling Tournament

This year’s event featured some of the best wrestlers from the Central Coast Section and the state of California. Featured teams included: Santa Ana High School (Southern California Power), 2007 Sierra Nevada Classic Champions Los Gatos High School (#2), Palo Alto High School (#7), Fremont High School (#10), Gunn High School (#12), and Salinas High School (#15). Although the competition was fierce
Valley Christian wrestlers made their presence well known by placing 5 of 6 Varsity wrestlers, three of which were finalist against the power house Santa Ana.

AJ Crawley is adjusting well to his new 140 lb weight class. After suffering an early defeat he went on another winning rampage placing him in medal round territory. One of those wins was an exciting overtime win against a tough Lynbrook opponent (see photo above).

CJ Van Elderen had an incredible tournament experience this weekend. So did his opponents, however they got the raw end of the deal. He demonstrated great head snapping takedowns. He also gave his opponents a breakdown and arm-bar to a tilt clinic (see photos above).

Charlie Galaviz who was seated #3 placed 2nd this tournament eliminating all CCS opponents by fall. He avenged a #2 seeded Sobrato opponent by fall. His only loss came in the Finals to a tough Santa Ana wrestler from the Southern Section. Charlie’s new season record is 12-2 with 11 wins by fall (see photos above).

Peipe James experienced his first tournament action this weekend after shaking off a lingering football injury. You would have had to look pretty hard to see any evidence of rust because he came out firing. He placed 2nd loosing only to another Santa Ana wrestler in the Finals (see photos above).

Christopher Tozier for the third tournament in a row has stood proudly on the winners podium. He finished 3rd at McNair & 1st at the Bay Area Inv. This weekend he just fell short of being the Cupertino Memorial heavyweight champion. Chris improved his record to 12-2 (see photos above).
