Season Recap
Boys Volleyball started in early January with Plyometric workouts. The team prepared for tryouts and the season by building up endurance, muscle tone and balance. The tryouts for Varsity resulted in 11 boys making the team. The team was composed of 3 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 5 Sophomores and 1 Freshman. Due to a medical condition a Varsity player from 2007 was unable to play and Ben Park also had to drop off the team due to a medical issue. That left us with 10 players for the bulk of the season.
The season started unexpectedly strong. We were 6 wins and 0 losses going into the Willow Glen tournament. We lost early in the morning of the tournament to Saratoga in a close match but came back to beat Aptos to win the tournament. What a great start to the season.
Our next tournament was in Chico. We won the Chico tournament in 2007 and were looking forward to competing in that tournament again. We struggled in the morning losing to Chico in a close match. We were then matched up against Nevada Union in the afternoon. Many of our boys know players on the Nevada Union team through club. The NU team had a big size and power advantage on us. At the start of the season we set two objectives for our team. We wanted to be a defensive team that was aggressive on defense and we wanted to run a very fast offense, since we did not have size we wanted to be quicker than our opponents. This was evident in our game against Nevada Union. We lost a very close match on a controversial call by the official, but the boys really battled. We took 5th in that tournament.
Our season continued with good success. We took Bellarmine to 5 games at Bellarmine and lost a close one to them. We suffered some injuries at the end of the season with Erik Holden turning his ankle in practice and Devin Rigg hurting his back. This left us weakened as we headed into the WCAL tournament. We battled league co-champion St. Francis in a tight 5 game match eventually losing, but surprising them with our aggressiveness and our strong serving.
We were seeded 7th in Division II in CCS. We played Willow Glen first round at Valley and beat them in 3 games. Next we faced Aptos at Aptos, the #2 seed. They played a great game and overcame our injury-riddled team in 3 games ending a great season. We ended the season in 3rd place in the WCAL, with an overall record of 22 wins and 15 losses.
Jay Henderson was named to the WCAL 1st Team All League Team, Devin Rigg and Kyle Gerrans were both named to the 2nd Team All League Team. Devin Rigg finished the season, 3rd in the league in kills with 118 and an average per game of 2.57. Jay Henderson finished 5th in the league in kills with 98 and an average per game of 2.13. Erik Holden finished 9th in the league in kills with 87 and an average per game of 1.89. Freshman Tyler Rigg was 12th in the league in kills.
Sophomore Kyle Gerrans finished the season 2nd in the WCAL for digs with 164 and an average per game of 3.57. Jay Henderson and Devin Rigg were 5th and 6th respectively with 109 and 106 digs.
With a small, young team Valley Christian’s Boys Volleyball team performed well this season and showed a lot of heart. |
