JV Season Recap
The season began in an unusual way. I became the coach kind of late in the process, so it took a little time to get organized. We did not have much time to see the golfer’s games before creating a team. There were several who sincerely wanted to play but had just begun golfing a few months earlier. Nonetheless, the guys were able to play and just needed to learn how to score better.
The team progressed nicely throughout the season. We were helped by a couple of players who came from the Varsity to gain more experience and a player who had given another sport a shot, but had really wanted to play golf all along. With these players’ leadership and the desire of all of the players to get better, the team scored better and better. The average score dropped 50 strokes over the course of the season; that is an average of 10 strokes per match player. Our record may not be impressive to some (4-10), but, given our relative inexperience, we had a successful year.
If these players will dedicate themselves to improving from now to the start of next season, our golf teams could be a factor in the league. As I told the players, the only difference between us and the better teams was experience and commitment to improve. We have a hopeful future.
